The Bitterroot Athlete Valley
This picture was taken from Main Street West Bridge on Saturday, April 24th before 8:00 am. I drove by, backed up and snapped this. Never noticed the stream coming in like this...it looks like a painting. I always glance over to see if Bruce the Moose is in the water? I have seen him crossing it once this season.
It was a busy month for Saturday activities with the Run for the Trees, the Griz Triathlon, Matt's Torture Run, and the YMCA Riverbank Run/Trifecta in Missoula.
The Peak Missoula's First Triathlon
I was honored with the loving title of "Transition Nazi" at the Peak Triathlon! It was so fun to eat what I wanted, workout the way I wanted, and to go to bed at the time I wanted without worry the night before. Usually, it is worry about packing this...do I have that? Did I eat right? Am I drinking enough water? etc., etc. etc. So I got to be on the other side of the fence and watch everyone else being nervous, doing their first triathlon (doing the backstroke), and waiting around for their swim heat. It turned out to be a pretty nice day considering rain was predicted and we had been getting so much rain.
I had much appreciation for this job when I saw that I could be easily distracted saying hi to everyone, talking and having a runner go the wrong way because I didn't direct them. There is often a disorientation, which I can appreciate, when you are in the race mode, maybe a bit oxygen deprived, and thinking about your next steps in the incoming and outgoing transitions. I saw that I really had to pay attention and direct. I also saw pointers that i could give to our Lake Como Triathlon volunteers when taking bikes and dismounting. Some of the Peak volunteers have never been to a triathlon let along participated. Thus, I gave them some handy tips of authoritatively informing the athletes to dismount at the line, and how to take their bikes: Stand to the side of the athlete-not in front, assertively tell them "I'm taking it, taking your bike," and be assertive taking the bikes. As when the athletes are more seasoned, they are letting go and assuming you are taking it--so grab it and hold on and stay out of their way because they are serious!
It was a fun, yet very long day from 7:00 to 4:00, start to awards. I saw many of Bitterroot athletes. Here are the Results.
