A lot has transpired since the last newsletter. We had two presentations, Matt Guzik & Josh Alexander on Destination vs. Competitive Marathon Training and Quintin Apedaile on Biking for Safety, Fun, & Competition. We had some great Saturday runs, Run for the Trees fun run, and the Griz Triathlon. Plus, we have had some interesting photo shoots with three local athletes whose life-size photos will go up on the Antara Sports building. Watch for this corner-stopping addition. Do you know who they will be?
Matt & Josh spoke on March 24th.. They had plenty to share from fueling your body to discipline to training schedules. Their PowerPoint presentation had a nice summary for marathon strategy: “I will start…When the gun goes off I will run for the first five miles feeling good. I will run to the 10th mile, I will say, ‘Only three more to the halfway mark.’” At the halfway mark, 13.1 miles, I will know 15 is in reach. At fifteen miles, I will say, ‘You’ve run twenty before, keep going.’” At twenty…I will say…’Run home!’”
Quintin Apedaile spoke on April 9th. As an attorney and avid cyclist, he brought Montana bike laws to our attention, saying basically, when on the road auto laws apply and when on sidewalks, rights of a pedestrian apply. There were also many technical and equipment questions, which Quintin explained and demonstrated with his daughter Jenna’s Specialized bike.
Thank you all for providing us with some great information for cyclists and athletes alike. The next two presentations will be our last for the season until Fall. Grant Kier will speak on Wednesday, 4/23 about the Memorial Day weekend cycling event “Tour of the Bitterroot.” Tuesday, May 13th, Pete Dunn, DPT, OTR/L Physical Therapist at Marcus Daly Rehab Services will speak on “Core Strength and Athletic Performance” just in time for the busy events of the summer. The Zoot rep, Karlee Brandner, will be here Monday evening, April 28th showing wetsuits, shoes, and Fall clothing. We will have a little evening social for questions and wetsuit fittings. Zoot wetsuits will be arriving at Antara Sports in May.
Runners Update
Since the last newsletter, we have had three weekend runs, Run for the Trees fun run, and the Griz Triathlon. March 29th most of our group was involved in the Bozeman Masters Swim event. The Canyons Masters Swim Team was well represented and placed in numerous events. Terry Davenport participated in his first fun run at Run for the Trees in Missoula. Then the Griz Triathlon eclipsed the Saturday morning run with most runners participating in the triathlon with excellent times. There could not have been a more perfect day with temps in the high 70s. A day of rest and then we are back to our training for the next event. We will run this Saturday, April 19th at the store. The following Saturday, 4/26, is the Riverbank Run in Missoula. You still have until the 19th to sign up at: http://www.ymcamissoula.org/ . The following week, May 4th, is the Bloomsday fun run in Spokane, http://www.bloomsdayrun.org/ . Online registration is still in effect through April 20th. Email, call, or stop by if you still want to run with others in Hamilton for event Saturdays.
